Getting in the secret place is not about the size of your space, but the quality of time you put into it. Be intentional and purposeful about setting aside time and a place to be with God. This is how I did mine. It's cozy and quiet. No music for me because sometimes I get distracted, but if that helps you connect with God, go for it. Be creative. Let's go boldly before the Throne of Grace. I've found that using a prayer log (notebook, journal, etc.), helps me remember those that have asked for prayer. I also use it to review my prayers from the previous day and I can take time out to thank God for prayers answered. and for prayers that are in route to be answered. This can help encourage your faith. What are some of your thoughts on what a prayer space can look like?
I use to find it difficult to pray for more than a few minutes. I would fall asleep, get hungry, my mind would wander, or I'd become easily distracted. Here are a few things I did to create more longevity. First don't let yourself talk yourself into doing it later or tomorrow. 9 out of 10 times tomorrow will be the next and then the next day. Force yourself to get up to brake the cycle of procrastination. Wake up early to pray. It's something about starting your day off with prayer that makes a huge difference in the rest of your day. Start with reading a scripture; Psalm 91, Psalm 26, Psalm 23, John 14, John 15 are some examples. These are really good ones. Then begin thanking God for who he is. Then pray for those you know that may be sick, or in the hospital, etc. Then begin thanking God for what He has done for you and your loved ones. If you have that prayer notebook or journal this is a good time to go over some those prayer request. You'd be surprised how many of those prayers you requested were answered. Sing a few songs of praise or worship and pray. Just talk to God and have a conversation, He knows it all already, but He still likes to hear you talk to Him about it. Before you know it you've gone 15, 20, 30 minutes. You'll notice that the time will move super fast. Lastly but certainly not least, ask God what does He want you to do today and then thank Him for it. You may not hear or feel anything in that moment, but throughout your day, God will begin dropping nuggets on your spirit. Be open to it. It will totally change your life.
The bible says, train up a child in the way that he/she should go, so when they are old, they would not depart from it. It starts early. As your rushing out the house to drop them off for school, just pick a couple scriptures for them to recite. John 3:16 is a pretty easy one, or Psalm 23, the Lord's prayer. It's also something they will memorize with repetition. This is planting the seeds of training. Getting the Word into our children at this age is so important because we are able to tap into that child-like faith that the bible talks about. Make it your business to resite some scriptures with your children. It doesn't matter how old. These are seeds of protection and provision as you release them to the world. Try it out for a week or two and see if it makes a difference. We've got our little ones reminding us to say our prayers when we are rushing out and that's a Psalm 91 life!
